Directional terms

superior- towards the head
inferior- towards the feet
anterior- towards the front of the body
posterior- towards the back of the body
medial- towards the middle of the body (ex. sternum)
lateral- towards to outside of the body (away from the middle)
proximal- towards the point of articulation/attachment
distal- away from point of attacment (towars finger/toes)
ipsilateral- on the same side
contralateral- on opposite sides
superficial- toward suface of skin
deep- further into body/ away from suface of skin
